Brownie pie combines a rich gooey brownie filling with a light sourdough pie crust to make the most delicious chocolatey dessert! With less than 10 ingredients, this easy recipe comes together in under an hour. Serve with whipped cream or ice cream for the perfect indulgent treat!

If you haven’t seen the movie “The Help,” then cancel your plans for tonight, and watch it! Both hilarious and heart-warming, this movie will make you laugh and cry as it tells the story of 3 women on a mission to improve life for black women in the south during the 1960s.
A few years ago, two of my friends invited me over to watch “The Help” for the first time and enjoy a homemade chocolate pie based on Minnie’s famous pie in the movie. Right before the secret ingredient in Minnie’s pie is revealed, they paused the movie and served the pie. The surprise of the secret ingredient was priceless, especially as we were eating chocolate pie while watching it!
This brownie pie is similar to the one in the movie, but thankfully the secret ingredient in this recipe is only coffee. 🙂 It really tastes best when you eat it with friends, so make one this week and host a movie night of “The Help!”
What to serve with Brownie pie
Whipped cream of course! You can also do vanilla or chocolate ice cream for pie à la mode. Fresh berries like raspberries or strawberries make an excellent garnish and add a bright flavor to balance the richness of the chocolate. Drizzle with caramel or chocolate sauce for the finishing touch, and you’ve got yourself the dessert of your dreams!

Tips for making Brownie Pie:
- Don’t have a sourdough starter? Well, first of all, you can easily fix that by visiting my post on how to start your own sourdough starter. However, since making your own starter takes time, you can use any general pie crust recipe or even a store-bought crust instead.
- Make sure to whisk the chocolate mixture constantly for the first 5 minutes it’s on the stove to break up any clumps of flour or cocoa powder.
- Dairy-free? Just use vegan butter for making your pie crust and vegan chocolate chips for the pie filling.
- Store any leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days. (However, it definitely tastes best when you eat it the day you make it.)
Tools you will need
To make this pie, you’ll need a rolling pin, small pan, whisk, spatula, and 9 inch pie dish.

Ingredients you will need
- 1/2 batch Sourdough Pie Crust – You can use store bought too if you prefer.
- 1 1/2 cups coconut milk – Alternatively, you can use regular milk, just be sure to stir it carefully on the heat so it doesn’t curdle.
- 1/4 cup flour – All-purpose not whole wheat!
- 1/4 cup cocoa powder – You can use sweetened or unsweetened.
- 1 cup chocolate chips – Semi-sweet or dark chocolate works best.
- 1 oz strong coffee – You could also use 1 tbsp of coffee grounds, but it might make the texture of the filling a bit weird.
- 1 tsp vanilla
How to make Brownie Pie
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. I’d recommend using the convection setting on your oven if you have it for even browning!
Roll out the pie dough into a circle large enough to cover your pie dish. Gently lift it into the dish and pat it down so it fits the sides. Trim the edges of the crust as needed so that it matches the edges of the pan. If the oven isn’t all the way preheated yet, keep the crust in the fridge until the oven is ready.

Bake the pie crust for 10 minutes then remove from the oven and set aside.
Meanwhile, in a small pot, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, and coconut milk. Heat over medium heat for about 5 minutes, whisking constantly to prevent the flour from forming lumps.
The pie filling will start to get thicker after cooking, and this is the time to add the coffee, vanillla, and chocolate chips. Stir to combine and let heat for another 3-5 minutes, whisking occasionally to remove lumps.
Remove the filling from the heat and pour into the pie crust. Use a spatula to smooth the top of the filling.

Return the pie to the the oven and bake for another 15 minutes, until the top is crackly and the crust is golden brown. Remove from the oven.
Let cool for at least 10 minutes before serving!
