This adorable DIY pumpkin decor will add a festive fall flair to your home! When it’s raining and gloomy outside, these decorations are sure to brighten your day. With a little preparation the night before, you can make your own pumpkin decor in only 20 minutes!

Some days, you just need to do a craft. All your creative energies are pent up inside, and you just need to let them out. By doing a craft, you can relax a little bit and make something beautiful that you’ll be proud to display.
At the same time though, you probably don’t want to deal with complicated directions, endless lists of supplies, or a mess when you finish. At least, I know I don’t! While it can be wonderful to spend all afternoon on a project, most of the time an hour is all I can get, and I don’t want to spend the majority of it in preparation or clean up.
This DIY pumpkin decor is the perfect craft for when you want to be creative, but don’t have much time on your hands and don’t want to deal with a mess. After you let your succulent clippings dry overnight, it only takes about 20 minutes to assemble, and all you have to clean up are your scissors and glue gun!
Personally, I loved making this pumpkin decor. My roommate Lydia had done it before and showed me how to make these pumpkins one day between classes. Not only does my pumpkin decor brighten my room, but also the process itself of making it brightened my whole day. If you’re in need of a quick yet satisfying craft, this DIY pumpkin decor is for you!
What can I use to decorate a pumpkin?
Of course, there are countless answers to this question, but for this project, you can use dried flowers and succulent clippings. These are easy and cheap to get, and they will make a simple, natural topping for your pumpkin. As a bonus, you can also reuse your succulents if you like by repotting them after you are done using your pumpkin decoration.
Ways to customize your pumpkin decor
- If you have lots of dried flowers and succulent cuttings, you could use a bigger pumpkin and make a fall centerpiece for your table. The only difficulty might be in making sure the top of your pumpkin is completely filled in.
- If you prefer, you could also just decorate the top of your pumpkin with different succulents instead of using wild flowers.
- On the other hand, you could decorate your pumpkin using only dried flowers and no succulents. The choice is up to you!
- If you don’t have any dried flowers, you could opt to use artificial ones. While they aren’t as beautiful, artificial flowers will still make a lovely topping to your pumpkin.

How long do pumpkin succulents last?
These pumpkin decorations will last for about 2-3 months, as long as your pumpkin isn’t decaying. After your pumpkin starts to rot, you can remove the succulents and replant them.
How do you glue succulents?
To glue succulents so that you will be able to replant them later, use a hot glue gun to spread a thin layer of glue along the side of the stem. The glue won’t really hurt the plant, and it should be fine to replant later.
Try not to glue the bottom of the stem, where you cut it off from the plant. This will enable the stem to still get water when you replant it.
Materials you will need
To make these DIY pumpkin decorations, you will need only 4 things:
- 1 small pumpkin
- Dried flowers
- A succulent you are ok with cutting
- Newspaper (to keep your workspace clean)
Tools you will need
All you need for this project is:
- A glue gun with glue
- Scissors
That’s it!
How to make DIY Pumpkin Decor:
The night before: Clip off 5-6 stems from your succulent using the scissors, and set them out on a piece of newspaper to dry overnight.

The next morning: gather your pumpkin, dried flowers, succulent clippings, and glue gun. Spread out a sheet of newspaper over your workspace to contain your mess.
Let your glue gun heat up while you arrange the succulent clippings and dried flowers on top of your pumpkin however you like. You may need to trim your dried flowers and succulents to fit, and that is totally fine. There really is no right way to do decorate the top of your pumpkin; just let your creativity run wild!

Once the glue gun is hot and you’ve decided how to arrange your decorations, begin by gluing the succulents to the top of your pumpkin. If you want to replant your succulent clippings later, you can! Just make sure to glue along the sides of the stem rather than at the bottom, that way they will still be able to get water once you repot them.

Next, glue your flowers to the top of your pumpkin. Again, try to avoid getting glue on the bottoms of the succulent stems.
Brush away any strings of hot glue, and then find a fun place to show off your new pumpkin decor!

Doesn’t that make you smile? 🙂
