During the summer, our family loves cooking meat on the grill. Fish, burgers, chicken, and of course, hot dogs! The problem is hot dog buns can be so flimsy – they get soggy and smushed and fall apart easily.
Another issue is the ingredient list: enriched wheat flour (companies artificially add vitamins back into the flour since they stripped it of nutrients during processing), sugar, soybean oil, and a whole lot of chemical preservatives. Yikes!
Thankfully, with these sourdough hot dog buns, you know exactly what ingredients are going into your food. No potentially mutagenic chemicals here! By fermenting the dough overnight, you allow the bacteria to break down some of the gluten making the bread easier to digest. Sweetened with honey and softened with coconut oil, these hot dog buns have lots of flavor from natural ingredients you can feel good about serving to your family and friends.

Tips for making Sourdough Hot Dog Buns
- This dough will be pretty sticky, which is a good thing. It helps the buns stay nice and soft. To make it easier to knead, use a stand mixer with a dough hook to make the dough.
- You can bake the hot dog buns either on a baking tray with parchment paper or in a greased baking dish. Just make sure to leave a little bit of space between the rolls so that they can expand as they rise.
- These hot dog buns will taste best if you eat them within five days. Store them at room temperature in an air-tight container.
Tools you will need
To make these hot dog buns, you’ll need a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment, measuring cups, and one or two baking trays with parchment paper. A kitchen scale is optional but definitely helpful!
Ingredients you will need
- 4 cups flour – All-purpose works well, but you can also use a combination of all-purpose and whole wheat.
- 1/2 cup sourdough starter – You can use it straight from the fridge if you want.
- 1 1/2 cups coconut milk – Feel free to substitute regular milk if you want or another milk alternative such as oat or almond milk.
- 1 tbsp honey – You can also use maple syrup if you prefer.
- 1 tbsp coconut oil – Feel free to use butter or ghee instead.
- 1 tsp salt – Kosher salt is great for this!
- 1 egg – For the egg wash at the end to make the rolls golden and shiny.
How to make Sourdough Hot Dog Buns
The night before:
Combine the sourdough starter, coconut milk, coconut oil, honey, and salt in the bowl of a stand mixer.
Slowly add in the flour a little bit at a time while mixing the dough on low speed. Once you’ve added in all the flour, mix the dough on a medium-low speed for about 5 minutes. It should form a sticky, smooth ball around the dough hook.
Cover the bowl and the the dough rise overnight.
In the morning:
Divide the dough into 12 sections. Roll each section into a ball, and then stretch it out into a roll about 4 1/2 to 5 inches long. Place the hot dog rolls into either a greased baking dish or a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Make sure there’s a little space between the rolls so that they have room to rise.
Let the dough rise again for another 2-4 hours, until the rolls are puffy. You can then refrigerate them until you’re ready to bake.
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Use your convection setting if you have it!
While the oven heats, whisk the egg with a little water and brush it over the tops of the hot dog buns.
Bake the hot dog buns for 17-20 minutes, until lightly golden brown and cooked through. Split apart from each other once they’ve cooled, and then cut in half to serve!
