That’s where this recipe comes in! 🙂 These sourdough dinner rolls have all the qualities of classic rolls (they’re soft and fluffy and golden brown) AND they have that unique sourdough tang everybody loves. Combining the two makes for absolute bread and butter perfection.
Another thing you’ll love about these sourdough dinner rolls is that they’re made with good-for-you ingredients like coconut oil, honey, and of course, sourdough starter. By making your own dinner rolls for Thanksgiving, you can add a healthier option to your meal without losing any flavor!
Why is Sourdough good for you?
Sourdough starter breaks down the effectively breaks down gluten in flour, which makes it easier for our bodies to digest. In fact, people with gluten-sensitivities often find that sourdough bread doesn’t bother their stomachs the way traditional bread does.

Tips for making Sourdough Dinner Rolls
- I’d recommend using a stand mixer to knead the dough. All you have to do is put the dough in the bowl and mix with a dough hook for 8-10 minutes!
- If you don’t have a stand mixer, you can knead the dough by hand for 8-10 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic.
- To shape the dinner rolls into smooth balls, make sure to tuck the edges of the ball underneath it. Then roll the ball of dough, bottom side down, on the counter for a few seconds. It may take a few rolls to practice, but once you get the hang of it, it’s super easy!
- You can make the dough ahead of time, shape, let rise, and then refrigerate the rolls after the second proof until you’re ready to bake them. This way you can have fresh, warm rolls right out of the oven at dinner time!
- Save these rolls in an air-tight container for up to 5 days at room temperature.
Tools you will need
To make these sourdough dinner rolls, you’ll need a stand mixer with a bowl, dough hook, and paddle attachment, two 9″ circular baking pans, parchment paper, and a towel to cover your rising dough.
Ingredients you will need
You won’t believe how yummy these rolls turn out given this simple ingredients list!
- 3 cups flour – All-purpose is best for these. If you want to substitute whole wheat flour, don’t use more than 1 1/2 cups so that your dinner rolls still turn out soft.
- 1/2 cup sourdough starter – Active and bubbly!
- 1 egg
- 2 tbsp coconut oil
- 1 tbsp honey – You can also use maple syrup instead if you prefer.
- 1 tsp salt – Kosher salt
- 1/2 cup water – Room temperature is best.
How to make Sourdough Dinner Rolls
The night before you want to bake your dinner rolls:
In the bowl of a stand mixer, use a paddle attachment to combine the egg, coconut oil, honey, salt, water, and sourdough starter.
Add in the flour slowly. Once incorporated, switch the attachment to a dough hook.
Mix on medium speed for 8-10 minutes. A ball of dough should form around the hook, and by the end the dough should be elastic and stretchy.
Cover the dough and let rise overnight.
The next morning:
Sprinkle flour over your counter top or a piece of parchment paper.
Divide the dough in half, and then half again.
Take each section and divide it into four balls.
To make the dinner rolls smooth, tuck the edges of the ball to its underside, and then gently roll on your surface to smooth.
Repeat for each dinner roll, and then place them in two greased 9″ circular pans. There should be space between them so that they can expand when they rise.
Cover the rolls and let rise until puffy and their edges touch – this can take anywhere from 1-4 hours.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Refrigerate the rolls while the oven heats
Bake at 350 for 15 minutes, until lightly golden brown. Enjoy warm!
